The legislation giving physiotherapists and podiatrists independent prescribing rights in England has now come into force, with positive responses. The Chartered Society of Physiotherapy said it was a “huge milestone” that will allow physiotherapists to give their patients rapid access to the drugs they need. Chief Executive of the Society of Chiropodists and Podiatrists Joanna Brown said that as well as improving patient access, this will help reduce pressure on other health professionals. The Health and Care Professions Council has published new standards for prescribing and updated its prescribing information. The impact of this change, which has been a long time coming, is unlikely to be felt before next summer when the first prescribers will have completed their training courses.
