Pharmacist prescribing of controlled drugs increased in 2012

There was a sharp increase in the number of items of controlled drugs prescribed by pharmacists in 2012 (up 62% on 2011), according to the Care Quality Commission (CQC)’s annual report ‘The safer management of controlled drugs’, 2012. The CQC says that this was probably partly as a result of the legal changes in April 2012 allowing nurse and pharmacist independent prescribers to prescribe controlled drugs and more changes can be expected when the 2013 report is published next year.
