PGDs to carry on in new NHS structure

Legislative changes are being planned to ensure that Clinical Commissioning Groups, the NHS Commissioning Board and Local Authorities are able to authorise Patient Group Directions (PGDs) and the MHRA is also looking at transitional arrangements to ensure that PGDs can continue to be used in the short term, while the new arrangements are put in place.

The issue arises because the bodies that are legally able to authorise PGDs – Primary Care Trusts, Health Authorities and Strategic Health Authorities – will not exist after April 2013 so their PGDs will no longer be valid.
