NICE publishes draft guidance on managing medicines in care homes

NICE has published its draft guidance on managing medicines in care homes, with the final version due in February. Individuals have to comment through registered stakeholder organisations, with a deadline of December 16.

The section on prescribing highlights the high rate of prescribing errors for people in adult care homes identified in the CHUMS study and provides detailed practical guidance, including a recommendation that prescribers should document in the resident’s care plan certain pieces of information, when prescribing variable doses or ‘when required’ medicines: circumstances for use; monitoring requirements; and the expected outcomes.
